This isn’t just another cup of hot chocolate. This is a full-on experience, a warm, spooky hug in a mug that makes any Halloween gathering feel special. It’s the kind of drink that makes you close your eyes after the first sip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream (for serving)
  • Halloween sprinkles (for serving)
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint sticks (for serving)
  • Chocolate shavings or curls (for serving)
  • Caramel sauce or chocolate syrup (for serving)
  • Pretzel sticks (for serving)
  • Gummy worms or candy eyeballs (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In your crockpot, add the 6 cups of whole milk, the can of sweetened condensed milk, and the 1 cup of heavy cream. Whisk them together until the sweetened condensed milk is fully incorporated.
  2. Whisk in the 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (if using), and a pinch of salt. Whisk vigorously to break up any lumps of cocoa powder.
  3. Add the 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Give it one last good stir.
  4. Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 2 hours. Stir occasionally, maybe once every 30 minutes, to make sure the chocolate is melting evenly and nothing is sticking to the bottom.
  5. After 2 hours, give the hot chocolate a final whisk. It should be smooth, glossy, and steaming. Ladle it into mugs and let everyone customize their own drink at the toppings bar.

Notes

If you’re short on time, you can cook this on HIGH for 1 hour, but the low-and-slow method blends the flavors better. Also, don’t leave it on warm for more than 4 hours, or the milk can start to separate. For a dairy-free version, swap the whole milk for oat milk, use full-fat coconut cream instead of heavy cream, and choose dairy-free chocolate chips.
