Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (6 ounces each, skin-on or skinless)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin or regular)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lemon (zest and juice)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (kosher preferred)
  • ยฝ teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground)
  • ยฝ teaspoon paprika (smoked paprika adds depth)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 bunch asparagus (about 1 pound, tough ends trimmed)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for asparagus)
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt (for asparagus)
  • ยผ teaspoon black pepper (for asparagus)
  • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced (optional, for asparagus)
  • Fresh dill or parsley (a handful, chopped, for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Flaky sea salt (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Line a large sheet pan (half-sheet size, about 18×13 inches) with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Take the salmon fillets out of the fridge and let them sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
  2. Rinse the asparagus and pat it dry. Bend one spear gently until it snaps to find the natural breaking point, then trim the rest to match. Toss the asparagus with 1 tablespoon olive oil, ยฝ teaspoon salt, and ยผ teaspoon pepper. If using sliced garlic, add it too. Spread the asparagus in a single layer on one half of the sheet pan.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, 2 tablespoons olive oil, minced garlic, lemon zest (from the whole lemon), 1 teaspoon salt, ยฝ teaspoon pepper, and ยฝ teaspoon paprika. Stir together.
  4. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Place them on the other half of the sheet pan, leaving space between each. Brush the lemon-garlic butter mixture generously over each fillet, including the sides. Reserve a little of the mixture for later.
  5. Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven. Roast for 12-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the salmon. At the 8-minute mark, use tongs to toss or flip the asparagus for even cooking.
  6. Check for doneness: the salmon should flake easily with a fork and reach an internal temperature of 145ยฐF (63ยฐC). The asparagus should be tender but still have a slight bite. Adjust timing based on thickness.
  7. Drizzle the reserved lemon-garlic butter over the cooked salmon and asparagus. Squeeze the zested lemon half over everything. Sprinkle with fresh dill or parsley and a pinch of flaky sea salt if desired. Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side.

Notes

For best results, let salmon sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before cooking. Use the bottom rack of the oven for better char on the asparagus. Let salmon rest for 2-3 minutes after roasting to redistribute juices. Double the lemon-garlic butter sauce if desired. Adjust roasting time based on asparagus thickness: add thin spears 3-4 minutes after salmon, thick spears 3-4 minutes before.
