A simple, budget-friendly dessert salad made with cherry pie filling, Cool Whip, sour cream, and mini marshmallows. It’s creamy, tangy, sweet, and perfect for potlucks or family meals.

Ingredients

  • Canned cherry pie filling (21 oz / 595 g)
  • Sweetened condensed milk (14 oz / 397 g)
  • Sour cream (1 cup / 240 ml)
  • Cool Whip (8 oz / 227 g), thawed
  • Mini marshmallows (2 cups / about 100 g)
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts (½ cup / 60 g), optional
  • Maraschino cherries (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Make sure your Cool Whip is thawed but still cold. Chop your nuts if using, and open your cans of cherry pie filling and sweetened condensed milk.
  2. Mix the base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and sour cream. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
  3. Fold in the Cool Whip: Add the thawed Cool Whip to the bowl. Use a rubber spatula to gently fold it into the condensed milk mixture until just combined, with no white streaks.
  4. Add the marshmallows: Pour in the mini marshmallows and fold them in gently until evenly distributed.
  5. Fold in the cherry pie filling: Add the entire can of cherry pie filling. Fold it in gently, being careful not to break up the cherries too much.
  6. Add the nuts (optional): If using pecans or walnuts, fold them in now. Reserve a small handful for garnish if desired.
  7. Chill: Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl or dish. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  8. Garnish and serve: Before serving, give it a gentle stir. Top with maraschino cherries and a sprinkle of nuts if desired. Serve cold.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling time—it allows the marshmallows to soften and flavors to meld. For a lighter version, use low-fat sour cream and reduced-fat Cool Whip. If making ahead, add nuts just before serving to keep them crunchy. This dessert is best served cold and can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
