Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
  2. Peel the apples completely. Remove the core from each apple using an apple corer or small knife, being careful not to cut through the bottom.
  3. Place the cored apples in a microwave-safe bowl with 2 tablespoons of water. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes.
  4. Open the tube of crescent roll dough and separate into 4 rectangles by pressing the perforations together firmly.
  5. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
  6. Cut each apple in half horizontally to make 4 apple halves. Place one apple half, cut-side up, in the center of a dough rectangle. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon sugar into the core cavity. Bring the corners of the dough up over the apple and pinch the seams together to seal. Repeat with remaining apple halves and dough rectangles.
  7. Arrange the wrapped apple dumplings in an 8×8-inch baking dish, seam-side down.
  8. Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Brush the tops of each dumpling with the melted butter. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar over the tops.
  9. In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup butter, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until sugar is dissolved and sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using.
  10. Pour the hot cinnamon sauce around the dumplings, not directly over the tops. The sauce should come about halfway up the sides of the dumplings.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes. At the 20-minute mark, check the dumplings. If tops are browning too quickly, loosely tent with aluminum foil.
  12. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve warm, spooning cinnamon sauce from the pan over each dumpling.

Notes

Don’t skip the par-cooking step for the applesโ€”it ensures they cook through perfectly. Seal the dough well to prevent sogginess. Let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes after baking to allow the sauce to thicken. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free crescent roll dough. For dairy-free, substitute butter with coconut oil or dairy-free margarine.
