This Easy Cranberry Sauce with Orange Zest and Cinnamon is the perfect holiday side dish. It comes together in under 20 minutes with simple ingredients and tastes like you spent all day on it.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 1 large orange (for 2 tablespoons juice and 1 tablespoon zest)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (about 3 inches)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse and pick over the cranberries, removing any soft or shriveled berries and stems.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water. Add the cinnamon stick. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves and mixture turns clear, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the cranberries to the boiling sugar mixture. Stir, then reduce heat to medium. Simmer steadily.
  4. After about 5 minutes, the cranberries will start to pop. Stir occasionally.
  5. Simmer for another 5-7 minutes until most cranberries have burst and the sauce thickens (it will coat the back of a spoon).
  6. Remove from heat. Remove the cinnamon stick. Stir in 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice.
  7. Stir in 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest.
  8. Let cool in the pot for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving bowl. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

For best flavor, use a cinnamon stick instead of ground cinnamon. Add orange zest at the end to preserve its fresh flavor. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Can be made up to 10 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Freezes well for up to 3 months.
