Rich and velvety Crockpot hot chocolate topped with homemade peppermint whipped cream. This easy slow cooker recipe is perfect for parties and gatherings, with simple ingredients and a set-it-and-forget-it method.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipped cream)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for whipped cream)
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (for whipped cream)
  • Crushed candy canes (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in the Crockpot: cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk together to break up clumps.
  2. Add the milk and heavy cream. Whisk until cocoa powder is fully incorporated.
  3. Add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  4. Cook on low for 2 hours. After about 45 minutes, give it a quick stir to help chocolate chips melt evenly.
  5. Stir in the peppermint extract (if using) right before serving. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and adjust to taste.
  6. Switch the Crockpot to warm setting to keep hot chocolate at perfect drinking temperature for 3-4 hours.
  7. For the peppermint whipped cream: Chill a mixing bowl and beaters in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Pour cold heavy cream into the chilled bowl. Beat on medium-high speed until soft peaks form (about 2-3 minutes).
  9. Add powdered sugar and peppermint extract. Continue beating until stiff peaks form (another 30-60 seconds). Be careful not to over-beat.
  10. Serve hot chocolate in mugs, topped with a dollop of peppermint whipped cream and crushed candy canes if desired.

Notes

Don’t let the hot chocolate boil; low and slow is key. Taste before serving to adjust sweetness. Make whipped cream at the last minute for best texture. Use a ladle for serving to avoid mess. Set up a topping bar with crushed candy canes, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings, and caramel sauce for guests to customize.
