This creamy, rich hot chocolate is made in a slow cooker with sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and cocoa powder. It’s the perfect hands-off treat for cold days, parties, or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Optional: mini marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, cinnamon sticks, 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk the 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder with about 1/2 cup of the whole milk until smooth and no lumps remain.
  2. Pour the remaining 5 1/2 cups of milk into a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the cocoa-milk mixture, sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours. After about 45 minutes, stir to help the chocolate chips melt evenly.
  5. Stir again before serving to ensure a silky texture.
  6. Ladle into mugs and serve warm with desired toppings.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and dairy-free sweetened condensed milk. For a peppermint twist, add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract. To keep warm, set slow cooker to WARM setting for up to 3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes. If too thick, stir in warm milk; if too thin, cook uncovered on LOW for 30 more minutes.
