This rich and indulgent hot chocolate is made in a slow cooker with just 5 minutes of prep. The salted caramel and chocolate meld together into a silky, velvety texture that tastes like a melted candy bar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Extra caramel drizzle (for topping)
  • Flaky sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk and cream. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into your slow cooker. Give it a quick stir with your whisk.
  2. Add the chocolate chips. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the milk mixture. Don’t stir yet.
  3. Add the caramel and vanilla. Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the chocolate chips, then add the vanilla extract. If using, sprinkle in the sea salt.
  4. Whisk it all together. Give everything a good whisk until the chocolate chips are mostly incorporated.
  5. Cook on low for 2 hours. Cover the slow cooker and set it to low. Let it cook for 2 hours, stirring once about halfway through.
  6. Stir and serve. Give it one final whisk before serving. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs, top with whipped cream, a drizzle of extra caramel, and a pinch of flaky sea salt.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use oat milk and full-fat coconut cream. For a spiked version, add bourbon or rum to each mug before pouring. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
