These witch finger cookies are creepy, fun, and surprisingly easy to make. With a buttery sugar cookie base and almond fingernails, they’re the perfect Halloween treat that looks impressive but comes together in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • About 30 whole blanched almonds
  • Red food coloring (gel works best)
  • Optional: green or purple food coloring for tinting the dough

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Scrape down the sides halfway through.
  3. Add the wet ingredients. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until fully combined.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  5. Shape the fingers. Scoop about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll it into a log shape about 3 inches long. Place it on the prepared baking sheet. Gently taper one end to create the fingertip shape, and make the other end slightly wider to resemble the base of a finger. Repeat with remaining dough, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  6. Create the knuckles. Using the back of a small knife or your fingernail, gently press 2-3 indentations along each finger to create knuckle lines.
  7. Add the fingernails. Press one blanched almond firmly into the tapered end of each finger, angled slightly upward.
  8. Bake. Place the sheets in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden.
  9. Cool completely. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  10. Add the blood effect. Once completely cool, use a small brush to apply red food coloring around the base of each almond nail. Let it pool slightly in the crevices. For extra gore, dab a tiny bit on the ‘cut’ end of the finger.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and eggs. If dough is too soft, chill for 15 minutes before shaping. Watch the oven closely—cookies go from perfect to overdone quickly. For a glossy blood effect, mix red gel food coloring with a drop of corn syrup. Cookies taste even better on day two.
